The clinicians and executives on the advisory board of the Center for Biomarker Research are experts in the field of biomarker research. The Center’s medical advisory board includes clinicians from leading medical institutions.

Dr. Mark B. Chandler

Dr. Chandler received his doctorate in Immunology from UT Southwestern Medical School and founded Inland Laboratories in 1982 to provide plant and bacterial toxins to the medical research community. He formed successor companies to develop and market innovative biological testing technologies. A noted authority and speaker on strategies to detect biological terrorism, Dr. Chandler is chairman and CEO of Biophysical Corporation.

Dr. Alan T. Moore

Dr. Moore graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin and UT Southwestern Medical School as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He also received the Stembridge Award as the outstanding pathology student. Dr. Moore completed his anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, and served as chief resident during his fourth year. Following his residency, he completed a hematopathology fellowship at Parkland. Dr. Moore practiced pathology in Austin, Texas, with Clinical Pathology Associates for more than 20 years. He has served as President and as a Director of Clinical Pathology Associates, Medical Director of the Seton Medical Center Clinical Laboratory, Chief of Staff of Seton Medical Center and President of the Texas Society of Pathologists. Dr. Moore has also served as the transplant pathologist for the Seton Medical Center Cardiac Transplant Program. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and hematopathology. Dr. Moore serves as Director of Clinical Pathology Research at Biophysical Corporation.

Anna E. Lokshin, PhD
Assistant Professor of Medicine
University of Pittsburgh
University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute

Dr. Lokshin hails from the academic heart of Russia. She received her doctorate in biology and genetics from Leningrad State University in 1983. She completed postdoctoral research in Leningrad. Dr. Lokshin subsequently came to the United States in 1988 to join the research faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. She has been active in biomarker research in cancer. In 2003 Dr. Lokshin joined the Early Detection Research Network of the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Lokshin is well respected in the field of cancer research and has published over 40 articles and abstracts on the topic. Dr. Lokshin is presently an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and a member of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Her current research interest is in the use of patterns of biomarkers for the earliest detection of ovarian cancer.

Ian Thompson, MD
Professor and Chief of Urology
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio

Dr. Thompson is a recognized leader in Urologic Oncology. He was educated at West Point Military Academy and then graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine. He received his Urology training at Brooke Army Medical Center and more specialized oncology training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Thompson has made major contributions to the field of urologic oncology and has published over 380 articles and abstracts. He has been a leader in the Early Detection Research Network of the National Cancer Institute. He is the past president of the Society of Urologic Oncology. Dr. Thompson is currently Professor and Chief of Urology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Sen. Kyle Janek
Texas State Senator
Anesthesiologist

Sen. Janek has served as a Texas state Senator since November 2002. After serving for eight years in the House of Representatives, he currently serves as vice chairman of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, and as a member of the Finance Committee, the Education Committee, the Subcommittee on Higher Education and the Administration Committee.

Christie Ballantyne, MD
Professor, Section of Atherosclerosis
Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, Methodist DeBakey Heart Center
Associate Chief and Clinical Director of the Section of Atherosclerosis, Department of Medicine
Director of the Maria and Alando J. Ballantyne, MD, Atherosclerosis Laboratory
Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine
Co-Director, Lipid Metabolism and Atherosclerosis Clinic, The Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas

Dr. Ballantyne received his Doctor of Medicine from Baylor College of Medicine, and his postgraduate training included an internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, Texas, a cardiology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine and an American Heart Association/Bugher Foundation Fellowship at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Institute for Molecular Genetics at Baylor.

Dr. Ballantyne has been the recipient of numerous study grants, including an American Heart Association Established Investigator Award and has several NIH grants to study leukocyte-endothelial adhesion molecules and novel markers for atherosclerosis. He is Editorial Director for www.lipidsonline.org.

Dr. Ballantyne has published extensively and has spoken nationally and internationally on lipids, atherosclerosis and inflammation. Dr. Ballantyne’s research interests include the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, with an emphasis on monocyte activation and adhesion.

James de Lemos, MD
Director of Coronary Care Unit, Parkland Memorial Hospital
